Speakup is run by and for people with learning disabilities and autistic people.

What we do

Speakup is passionate about creating employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. We employ people with lived experience in full and part-time work.

Three of our salaried people work with Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust as Peer Support Workers. They work in Learning Disability Services, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

We also provide work placement opportunities to help people get the skills and experience they need to gain employment.

Many self-advocates working or volunteering for Speakup have benefited from the nurturing support of Speakup. Numerous individuals have progressed onto successful careers.

One such success story is David Gill. David began his working career as a volunteer at Speakup. He was soon employed as part of the team. He then moved on to working with NHS England as an Autism Advisor.

David has always been a passionate advocate for autistic people. In 2021 he was awarded a Dimensions Learning Disability and Autism Leaders award for his work.
