How to get in touch:
We are a non-profit social enterprise working to support people with learning disabilities and autistic people. The enterprise runs out of our commercial business (Dexx Family Activity Centre) which provides a number of volunteering and work experience opportunities, and the potential of paid employment opportunities, if and when the person is ready.
We use a person-centred approach meaning that nobody's pathway is the same and instead each individual has a development plan tailored to what they want to learn. Due to the real-life business element of our offer, individuals can try out various roles, finding what sort of work they most enjoy.
As well as the work experience side of things, we believe that education, health and social inclusion is all massively important towards an individual’s personal development too. This is why when we aren't open to the public, we help people gain qualifications suited to their pathway, assist with CV writing, job searching and getting personal affairs in order. We run social sessions using our onsite activities including an onsite gym, trampoline park, mini golf course and much more. Every couple of months we also try to organise social days out doing different things all the time. All these things can be great way to meet new people, socialise and stay active.
Our life skills programme is a great tool for anyone with a learning disability to gain and improve work, social and life skills, as well as stay active, meet new people and become a better more confident and motivated version of themselves.
Who can access our support:
There is a cost to the service and you need to be 18+ to join. But other than that we can support anyone looking to develop life and social skills, improve qualifications and gain work experience.
What the organisation does:
Who do we work with?
We work with autistic people and people with learning disabilities that are 18+ and looking to learn life skills and gain work experience, helping them on their journey to employment.
How to Join us?
There is a cost to our service and people can be referred or self-refer. Please request a referal form from the email address above if you are interested in joining us. We also do taster days at no cost so people can see if our programme is for them.
What areas of South Yorkshire do we cover?
We are based in Rotherham but can work to support anyone South Yorkshire wide.
Where and how do we support people?
We support people to develop basic life skills such as, but not exclusive to, customer service improving communication and social interaction skills, money handling and maths improvement, taking money from paying customers, organisational skills and cleaning, maintenance, health and Safety.
We also provide formal online training to support the development of basic Maths and English skills and specific interests identified via a personal development plan. E.g. IT skills, Sports Marshalling, Catering, Fire Safety, First Aid, and much more.
We have a range of work environments in our offer. These include a trampoline and scooter park, mini golf course, café, woodwork shop and printing/merchandising suite. Having this choice allows us to offer purposeful work experience. Individuals can try out various roles, finding what sort of work they most enjoy.
Can we offer support to employers?
We have funding in place to provide an in-place job coach if required and and/or wanted by the individual. We have a number of established relationships with local employers and support our people to attend open days, complete CV’s and application forms, attend interviews and provide follow on support in the form of attendance at probation reviews, one to ones etc. We support the employers to develop their Trainers and Training programmes to get the best from the people they employ and to support our people into their employment and to achieve success.
